Understanding Your Electricity Tariff

Learn the details of every element of your electricity tariff, how each
one affects your electricity costs and what you can do to reduce these

COURSE OVERVIEW

Electricity prices in South Africa have been on a steep upward trajectory for over a decade. This has significantly increased the cost of doing business.

As electricity users, we do not have to be helpless in the face of cost increases, as there are many actions we can take to reduce our costs of electricity. Some of these actions are technical, involving approaches such as energy efficiency, load shifting and demand reduction. Others involve simply managing our operations differently. In some cases, we can benefit from switching to a more favourable tariff structure. No matter what we do to reduce our costs of electricity, we have to understand our electricity tariff structure first, as it determines how we can save electricity and how to quantify the benefits we can expect.

This course does just this, teaching participants how to interpret the specific electricity tariff applicable to the organisation they work at.

TARGET AUDIENCE

Applicable to teams at an individual facility who would like to understand their electricity tariff in more detail.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course is comprised of individual modules that begin with basic concepts regarding tariffs and then explore the specific tariff at the site in question, using actual data from the most recent 12 months of operation at the facility.

After completing this module, participants will be able to:

  • Explain what a tariff is and why it is important
  • Describe how electricity is typically metered in South Africa
  • Describe how tariffs are set in South Africa
  • Describe where to access current tariffs and potential alternative tariffs the organisation may be able to use

After completing this module, participants will be able to:

  • Explain who supplies electricity to the organisation
  • Discuss the concept of seasonality in electricity billing if applicable to the organisation
  • Discuss the concept of time of use if applicable to the organisation
  • List the various components of the tariff applicable to the organisation as regards fixed charges, energy charges, demand charges, energy-related charges, reactive energy charges, access
charges and other charges as applicable
  • Describe what each component means and the implications for electricity costs

After completing this module, participants will be able to:

  • Interpret the organisation’s electricity bills for the most recent 12-month calendar year, as collated and analysed by the facilitator
  • Describe trends in electricity costs over the period and propose possible reasons for observed trends

After completing this module, participants will be able to:

  • Conceptually explain what is required to reduce individual cost line items on the organisation’s electricity bill
  • Explain the concept of a Significant Energy User (SEU) as it applies to electricity
  • This next part of the module is facilitated in the form of a brainstorming session and deals with the site’s unique operations:
    • Identify, with the facilitator’s help and at a preliminary level, the SEU’s under the organisation’s control
    • Describe the key electricity cost reduction opportunities to investigate for each individual SEU

After completing this module, participants will be able to:

  • Determine which components of a tariff are relevant when calculating electricity costs or savings associated with an individual piece of equipment or operation
  • Use the tariff to calculate basic electricity costs and/or savings, taking factors such as time of use or seasonality into account
