EnergySCAN Assessments
Rapid, low-cost, yet comprehensive - energy assessments that identify energy efficiency and alternative energy opportunities and provide short, medium and long-term energy management guidance.
Designed to be a first step for manufacturing and commercial sites interested in improving their energy performance, the EnergySCAN Assessment encompasses a 1-day site visit and an online feedback presentation.
The assessment entails the following activities:
– an on-site kick-off meeting between VWG’s engineers and the site team to assess operations, energy sources and costs
– a plant walkthrough to assess the facility, identify opportunities and prioritise these
– a short on-site preliminary feedback session
– formal feedback to discuss opportunities identified and to lay out short, medium and long-term energy tactics that will reduce costs and emissions
All energy sources are reviewed and all manufacturing and utilities processes are inspected. While the exercise is primarily qualitative, some spot measurements will be taken in order to quantify selected opportunities.
The costs of an EnergySCAN Assessment are the same regardless of the size of the facility being assessed. The time available will be used in a manner that maximises value for each individual site. For smaller sites, more time will be spent on quantifying opportunities. For larger sites more time will be spent on generating a comprehensive list of opportunities. In all cases the benefits of following the recommendations of the assessment will far outweigh the costs of the assessment itself.
The EnergySCAN Assessment costs R14,999 plus travel costs, and is available anywhere in South Africa. It is suitable for facilities with annual energy bills starting from as little as R500,000/annum, through to large, energy-intensive industrial facilities.
What kinds of opportunities does an EnergySCAN Assessment identify?
EnergySCAN Assessments identify no-cost projects, low-cost projects and capital projects across the facility being assessed. All systems are assessed. In a compressed air system, the following are examples of projects in each of these categories:
No-cost
– Adjust air compressor discharge pressure setpoints
– Adjust compressed air dryer pressure dew point setpoint
– Activate the compressor rundown timer
Low-cost
– Repair air leaks (arranged in a priority list with estimates of cost of energy losses)
– Install a solenoid valve hardwired to a machine motor so that compressed air supply stops whenever the machine stops
– Install regulators and reduce supply pressure to specific areas or pieces of equipment
Investment projects
– Install a heat recovery plate pack and use compressor waste heat to generate hot water
– Install a larger air receiver to enable reduced time of operation in an unloaded state
– Replace fixed-speed screw compressor with a VSD compressor
The EnergySCAN Assessment will therefore generate a comprehensive list of potential projects, assembled into a project portfolio that is part of the feedback report, and all prioritised for implementation so that the participating site has a comprehensive energy roadmap that can be followed to fundamentally improve energy performance..
